India seeks to end trophy drought

India, the 2-time champions, will host the ICC World Cup 2023 edition in the months of October and November this year. In all probability, this tournament is going to start on 5th October in the country. India is recently suffering from a trophy drought being the World Cup champions in 1983 and 2011. However, they will try to end this trophy drought at the 2023 World Cup mentioned in this article. Incidentally, when India won the World Cup for the last time in 2011, they had been the host nation as well.

Rohit Sharma to lead India

Although the all-format skipper Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian side in the 2023 World Cup, it was under his leadership that the Men in Blues succeeded in making it to the semis at the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022. Incidentally, this same person will likewise lead India in the ICC World Test Championship final that will happen before the 50-over World Cup tournament in the month of June this year.

Final at Ahmedabad

The World Cup final in the year 2023 will take place at the reputed Narendra Modi Stadium in the city of Ahmedabad. This happens to be the biggest cricket stadium on the planet at the moment. Apart from Ahmedabad, the other cities in the country that will also host matches of the World Cup include the likes of Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Indore, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Rajkot in addition to Mumbai. This tournament is going to go on for as many as 46 days and as many as 48 ODIs will be played in the entire tournament during that time.

It has been reported that there has been a delay in the schedule of the 2023 World Cup because of the issue of tax exemption and clearance of visas for the Pakistani cricket team. Before, India received the hosting rights for the T20 World Cup in 2016, T20 World Cup in 2021, and the ODI World Cup in 2023. The report has further stated that the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has already given assurance to the ICC that the Indian government will clear the Pakistan team’s visa for the forthcoming World Cup.

Pakistan has not played any ICC event since 2013 in India. The Babar Azam-led Pakistan played against England in the ICC World Cup T20 final and finished second best eventually. The English side will start playing in the ICC World Cup this year as the defending champions. England succeeded in lifting the 2019 50-over World Cup trophy after beating New Zealand under the guidance of Eoin Morgan.
