Doordarshan Completed 64 years As National Broadcaster
On Friday, Doordarshan (also known as DD) succeeded in completing 64 years of service. It was on September 15, 1959, that the experimental broadcaster commenced which became a regular service in the year 1965 and DD started to beam signals to residences in and around Delhi. Rajendra Prasad, who was the President at the time, inaugurated the initial broadcast.
The services had been extended to Amritsar as well as Mumbai by the year 1972. The expansion of Doordarshan went to 7 more cities during the subsequent 3 years. Since that time, DD has expanded its presence significantly among the masses.
