In addition to becoming one of the youngest prime leaders in UK history, Rishi Sunak will be the country’s first prime minister of Indian descent. He won the contest to lead the Conservative Party, which left him in charge of guiding a bitterly divided nation through a recession that would make millions of people impoverished.
Born in UK’s Southampton to an Indian household, Rishi Sunak is the son of a pharmacy mother and a National Health Service (NHS) general practitioner father.
An alumnus of Stanford and Oxford Universities, Sunak is famously wed to Akshata Murty, the child of Infosys co-founder and multibillionaire NR Narayana Murthy.
When the Tory party chose a new leader in September, Liz Truss defeated Sunak, one of the Tory leaders who spearheaded the uprising against former PM Boris Johnson.
In addition to other world leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Sunak. He tweeted: “Warmest congratulations @RishiSunak! As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the ‘living bridge’ of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership.”
