- Raw or Undercooked Meat: This includes rare steak, sushi, or any meat that hasn’t been cooked thoroughly. These can contain harmful bacteria or parasites like Toxoplasma, which can lead to infections.
- Unpasteurized Dairy Products: Avoid soft cheeses like Brie, Camembert, and blue cheese unless they are clearly labeled as pasteurized. Unpasteurized milk and cheese can contain Listeria, which can be dangerous during pregnancy.
- Certain Fish with High Mercury Levels: Fish like shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish are high in mercury, which can affect the baby’s developing nervous system. Instead, opt for low-mercury fish like salmon, tilapia, or shrimp.
- Raw or Undercooked Eggs: Raw eggs can contain Salmonella, so avoid foods like homemade Caesar dressing, eggnog, and raw cookie dough. Make sure eggs are fully cooked before consuming them.
