History

The formation of Bangladesh took place in the year 1971 when India and Pakistan were involved in a conflict that year. Despite the fact that direct armed conflicts did not take place on a large scale, the two neighboring nations were competing for gaining control of the Siachen glacier. For this, they formed military outposts in the adjacent mountain ranges.

There was a further escalation of tension when both India and Pakistan were involved in conducting nuclear tests in the year 1998. The Lahore Declaration was signed in the year 1999 to reduce the tension prevailing between the 2 countries. The intention of the Lahore Declaration was to resolve the Kashmir conflict in a peaceful manner.

The armed forces of Pakistan deployed army men during the winter months of 1998-99 for traversing the LOC and gaining control of the fortified positions overlooking the NH 1A in Kargil, Ladakh area. The main target of these Pakistani forces was to control the civilian and military movements in the locality.

In the beginning, the Indian army was of the notion that the infiltrators had been “jihadis” or terrorists. Nevertheless, it soon became clear to them that the attack had been a part of an organized plan more than anything else. The Indian army retaliated in response and deployed as many as 2,00,000 Indian troops in the area for safeguarding their country.
